Ground-breaking oracle deck with hexagonal cards, which uses synchronicity to answer the seeker's question.Noticing synchronicity - or random coincidences that strike us as meaningful - allows us to align our life path with the flow of the universe. This is the first-ever oracle to draw on the power of synchronicity to give you insight into your problems, answer your questions and highlight previously unconsidered patterns and potential pathways in your life. There are 57 hexagonal cards in the deck, each with 8 symbols, plus an 80pp booklet profiling each of the 57 symbols and giving instructions on how to use the cards. For instant insight, choose two cards at random and find the symbol that matches – there will only be one. Information about the meaning of the symbolism is given in the booklet, but ultimately it's up to you to interpret the symbol based on what it means for you. For a more in-depth answer to your problem, choose two cards for each of these three questions: Where are you coming from? Where are you now? Where are you going? Note the matching symbol in each case and see what it mean to you and what insights it throws up for the past, present and future of your situation. Then arrange the chosen cards in a circle, pull the final card - the intuition card - and place it in the centre. Which symbols match? Which ones predominate? What does it mean to you? The booklet offers a contemplation and a meditation for each symbol to help you interpret the symbols. The deck uses a wide range of symbols, including Jungian archetypes, contemporary icons, and images from alchemy, science and mysticism - from the Kabbalah's tree of life and the yin yang symbol to images of an anchor, a wave, a spider's web, and a mirror. As you search for the synchronicity and enjoy the magic of finding it through this deck, you will find that synchronicity comes up more and more in your everyday life. What can synchronicity tell you?
The self as a subject is one of the most fascinating and fruitful of artistic enterprises. From the 15th century to today, this collection brings together some of the best examples of self-portraiture to explore the genre’s evolution over the centuries as well as the enduring questions of selfhood and self-representation that have besieged human experience for centuries before social media and the selfie. Is a self-portrait of an artist a medium of reflection? Or is it merely a black void, the “false mirror,” as the Surrealist Rene Magritte entitled his 1928 painting of an eye? How much does it impart about contemporary notions of beauty, power, and status? From Albrecht Durer to Egon Schiele, Fra Filippo Lippi to Frida Kahlo, this far-reaching collection explores the numerous ways in which artists have taken themselves as subjects, the variety of ingenious methods and perspectives they have used, and the intriguing questions they raise.About the seriesBorn back in 1985, the Basic Art Series has evolved into the best-selling art book collection ever published. New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins, writing as Erin Sterling, casts a spell with a spine-tingling romance full of wishes, witches, and hexes gone wrong.Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths...and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn't use her magic this way, but with only an "orchard hayride" scented candle on hand, she isn't worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two. That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town's ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town's ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it's too late.
Where will you live in 2030? Where will your children settle in 2040? What will the map of humanity look like in 2050?In the 60,000 years since people began colonising the continents, a recurring feature of human civilisation has been mobility - the constant search for resources and stability. Seismic global events - wars and genocides, revolutions and pandemics - have only accelerated the process. The map of humanity isn't settled, not now, not ever.As climate change tips toward full-blown crisis, economies collapse, governments destabilise and technology disrupts, we're entering a new age of mass migrations - one that will scatter both the dispossessed and the well-off. Which areas will people abandon and where will they resettle? Which countries will accept or reject them? As today's world population, which includes four billion restless youth, votes with their feet, what map of human geography will emerge? Here global strategy advisor Parag Khanna provides an illuminating and authoritative vision of the next phase of human civilisation - one that is both mobile and sustainable. As the book explores, in the years ahead people will move to where the resources are and technologies will flow to the people who need them, returning us to our nomadic roots while building more secure habitats. Move is a fascinating look at the deep trends that are shaping the most likely scenarios for the future. Most importantly, it guides each of us as we determine our optimal location on humanity's ever-changing map.
Magic has enchanted humankind for millennia, evoking terror, laughter, shock, and amazement. Once persecuted as heretics and sorcerers, magicians have always been conduits to a parallel universe of limitless possibility―whether invoking spirits, reading minds, or inverting the laws of nature by sleight of hand. Long before science fiction, virtual realities, video games, and the Internet, the craft of magic was the most powerful fantasy world man had ever known. As the pioneers of special effects throughout history, magicians have never ceased to mystify us by making the impossible possible. This book celebrates more than 500 years of the stunning visual culture of the world’s greatest magicians. Featuring more than 750 rarely seen vintage posters, photographs, handbills, and engravings as well as paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and Bruegel among others, Magic traces the history of magic as a performing art from the 1400s to the 1950s. Combining sensational images with incisive text, the book explores the evolution of the magicians’ craft, from medieval street performers to the brilliant stage magicians who gave rise to cinematic special effects; from the 19th century’s golden age of magic to groundbreaking daredevils like Houdini and the early 20th century’s vaudevillians.

During his most productive decade, the 1880s, Maupassant wrote more than 300 stories, including 'Boule de Suif', 'The Necklace', 'The House of Madame Tellier', 'The Hand', 'The Horla' and 'Mademoiselle Fifi'. Marked by the psychological realism that he famously pioneered, the tales in this selection lead us on a tour of the human experience-lust and love, revenge and ridicule, terror and madness. Many take place in the author's native Normandy, but the settings range farther abroad as well, from Brittany and Paris to Corsica and the Mediterranean coast, and even to North Africa and India. Maupassant's remarkable range and ability to evoke an entire world in a few pages have ensured that his fiction has retained its power to entertain through generations of readers. Marjorie Laurie's accomplished translations from the 1920s have similarly stood the test of time.
Russian Nobel prize-winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) is widely acknowledged as one of the most important figures-and perhaps the most important writer-of the last century. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, the first English translation of his memoir of the West, Between Two Millstones, Book 1, is being published. Fast-paced, absorbing, and as compelling as the earlier installments of his memoir The Oak and the Calf (1975), Between Two Millstones begins on February 12, 1974, when Solzhenitsyn found himself forcibly expelled to Frankfurt, West Germany, as a result of the publication in the West of The Gulag Archipelago. Solzhenitsyn moved to Zurich, Switzerland, for a time and was considered the most famous man in the world, hounded by journalists and reporters. During this period, he found himself untethered and unable to work while he tried to acclimate to his new surroundings.Between Two Millstones contains vivid descriptions of Solzhenitsyn's journeys to various European countries and North American locales, where he and his wife Natalia ("Alya") searched for a location to settle their young family. There are fascinating descriptions of one-on-one meetings with prominent individuals, detailed accounts of public speeches such as the 1978 Harvard University commencement, comments on his television appearances, accounts of his struggles with unscrupulous publishers and agents who mishandled the Western editions of his books, and the KGB disinformation efforts to besmirch his name. There are also passages on Solzhenitsyn's family and their property in Cavendish, Vermont, whose forested hillsides and harsh winters evoked his Russian homeland, and where he could finally work undisturbed on his ten-volume history of the Russian Revolution, The Red Wheel.Stories include the efforts made to assure a proper education for the writer's three sons, their desire to return one day to their home in Russia, and descriptions of his extraordinary wife, editor, literary advisor, and director of the Russian Social Fund, Alya, who successfully arranged, at great peril to herself and to her family, to smuggle Solzhenitsyn's invaluable archive out of the Soviet Union.Between Two Millstones is a literary event of the first magnitude. The book dramatically reflects the pain of Solzhenitsyn's separation from his Russian homeland and the chasm of miscomprehension between him and Western society.
From a private collection in Italy, these previously unpublished works by Francis Bacon are presented here in thematic sections, each of which is preceded by a short introductory text. Nearly 700 drawings, pastels, and collages were gifted by Bacon over the course of many years to his close friend, Italian journalist Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino. His commentary is included here, along with texts by noted art historians Edward Lucie-Smith and Fernando Castro Florez, and an authentication report from Ambra Draghetti, graphological consultant to the Court of Bologna. The works were photographed expressly for this publication.Text in English and Italian.
'Julian Casanova is one of the most original and exciting historians currently working on the Spanish Civil War. His books on anarchism, the Catholic Church and the Francoist repression have earned him a glowing international reputation. This short history draws on his own research and combines his trademark reliability and readability in a book that students and general readers alike will find invaluable.'” ―Paul Preston, Principe de Asturias Professor of Contemporary Spanish History, London School of Economics, UK“'Julian Casanova is one of the most productive of the current generation of Spanish intellectuals who are determined that democracy and human rights, now better established than in any previous period of Spanish history, will become the habitual and accepted framework of Spanish public life. He shows clearly how the political shortcomings of the Republic, the enthusiasm of Mussolini and Hitler to aid General Franco, the Stalinist mixture of military aid with secretive political interference in the life of the Republic, and the failure of the Western democracies to aid the Republic, all combined to assure the military victory and postwar dictatorship of Franco. This is an excellently written and very carefully documented history of the Civil War of 1936-39.'” ―Gabriel Jackson, Professor Emeritus of History, University of California, San Diego, USA“'Julian Casanova is one of Spain s leading historians. His innovative and ground-breaking research on the Spanish Civil War and its long aftermath has also garnered him an international reputation, and in this Short History he distils his rich knowledge and insight into a readable synthesis. Casanova explains the deep domestic origins of the Spanish war, while also placing it in its proper European context of convulsive continental change from First to Second World Wars. Students and general readers alike will find his book informative, enlightening and thought-provoking in equal measure.'” ―Helen Graham, Professor of Modern Spanish History, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK“'Exemplary... a considerable achievement.'” ―The Scotsman“In a crowded field, there is a place for the insights of the distinguished Spanish historian Julian Casanova as delivered in this concise and elegant volume.” ―Professor Sir Paul Preston, author of The Spanish Civil War. Reaction, Revolution & Revenge“At the time, the popular view on both sides of the Spanish civil war was that the issues at stake were simple in the eyes of both the left and the right, at home and abroad. Even today the issue of General Franco's legacy is still fought over in such terms. But it was never that straightforward, and Professor Casanova has managed brilliantly to summarise the core issues in readable form without in any way minimising their extreme complexity.” ―Jonathan Haslam FBA, Professor Emeritus in the History of International Relations, Cambridge University, UK

This delightful collection ranges from Ovid to Austen and from Robin Hood's Sherwood Forest (via Thomas Love Peacock's Maid Marian) to Washington Irving's 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. Here are forest-haunted fairy tales both classic (the Brothers Grimm) and inventively retold (Angela Carter). There is room in these woods for comedy as well as terror, in Stella Gibbons's Cold Comfort Farm, and Alexander McCall Smith's 'Head Tree'. Notable writers from around the world contribute arboreal fiction-from South Africa, Finland, France, Zimbabwe, Russia, Martinique, and India, as well as Britain, Ireland, Canada and America. From Daphne du Maurier's 'The Apple Tree' to R. K. Narayan's 'Under the Banyan Tree', the sheer range of stories in these pages will leave readers refreshed and dazzled.
